Earlier we reported that Megaupload has been taken down by federal prosecutors due to piracy concerns. Now the loose collective known as Anonymous has taken down justice.gov and universalmusic.com citing Megaupload as the reason in their tweets.
In terms of DDoS attacks Anonymous has been quiet of late, or at least they haven’t been broadcasting it. In fact the group have been fairly “well behaved” using their ever-increasing number of followers to support protests such as the Occupy movement as well as yesterday’s SOPA/PIPA protest.
Update 1: Anonymous have now taken down another band of sites, Recording Industry Association of America, Motion Picture Association of America and Universal Music Group are all currently offline due to Anonymous’ efforts.
Update 2: Copyright.gov is now down as well, another hit by Anonymous. As a side note, “Universal Music”, “#OpMegaupload” and “Department of Justice” are all trending on Twitter.
Update 3: According to Anonymous’ Twitter feed this is their largest ever attack with over 5,500 users currently connected to their DDoS tool known as LOIC.
Update 4: Hadopi.fr, the French agency responsible for finding users illegally sharing and downloading files, is now offline as well.
Update 5: bmi.com, Broadcast Music Inc’s website, appears to be sporadically down. At the very least their website is extremely slow and clearly experiencing difficulties.
